Program Overview

The After-School Program operates from the close of the regular school day until 6:30 p.m. Children enrolled in the regular day program may enroll in the afterschool program.  Children are brought in to the gymnasium area by their teachers and dropped off with the Academic Athlete Staff.  Staff members take roll and begin homework/tutoring and reading programs.  Once these items have been completed, children participate in a wide variety of activities that challenge body and mind.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

Focus on the Child

To provide a healthy living atmosphere by creating a warm, trusting relationship among the children and between the child and his/her teacher.

To nurture a sense of independence within each child by providing decision-making experiences to promote self-discipline.

To develop and promote a positive self-concept.

To help children express and cope with their emotions.

To help children learn how to get along with others, recognizing different values and attitudes of others.

To offer opportunities which will develop an individual’s creativity.

Focus on the Parent

To make parents feel confident that their children have been left in a safe, healthy, happy, and stimulating environment.

To create an open relationship between parent and staff which will promote positive interactions concerning children.

To provide an environment in which parents can nurture more productive relationships with their children.

PROGRAM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

Departure of Children:

In the afternoon, parents are required to enter the school to pick up their children from Afterschool Programs. Children are released to designated adults only. Parents are to advise the school of any changes that may need to be made for someone other than the designated adult to pick up their child. Parents must have security code and a picture ID.

Policy Regarding Early Closing of School:

The early dismissal of school will activate the After-School Program, which will start at the time of school dismissal and extend until regular closing time. The exception to this procedure will be based upon the severity of weather conditions that necessitate the closing of the general business community. The After-School Program will not operate if there is a cancellation of school.

In Case of Illness: If a child becomes ill, the parent, or designated adult, will be called to pick up the child as soon as possible. All parents must provide an emergency number, which can be called, if the parent cannot be reached. In addition, the name of the child’s family physician is kept on file in the office. The child will be kept comfortable in the health room or office until someone arrives. Slight injuries that occur will receive first aid. If a child contracts a communicable disease other than a cold, parents should notify the school.

Discipline Procedures:

It is important that children respect themselves, other people, and property. Discipline should be viewed in a very positive manner with appropriate activities, mutual respect, adequate planning, and consistent supervision contributing to a climate in which self-discipline can flourish.

The teacher will set aside time during the first week of school to develop and discuss guidelines, procedures and rules with the children. These will be reviewed as necessary throughout the school year.

Occasionally, children will need to be removed from a situation when they cannot act appropriately. The student may be taken to the office or another place to regain his/her composure.

If problems with a child seem to arise frequently, the parent will be notified and a conference scheduled to discuss these concerns. Persistent and/or severe misbehavior may result in the child being withdrawn from the program.
